Used to zip-tie every wire tight until it bit me on a service call last fall
I used to bundle all my wires real tight with zip ties thinking it looked clean. Then I had to pull a faulty sensor wire on a DSC system in a finished basement and had to cut damn near every tie to trace the run. Now I leave a little slack and use velcro straps for main bundles - way easier to service.

That "finished basement" detail made me cringe so hard I almost dropped my phone... you had to cut through all those zip ties in someones nice finished space? I bet that was a nightmare, having to be careful not to scratch up the ceiling tiles or whatever was above you. And the time it must have taken, tracing that one bad wire through a whole rats nest you made yourself is brutal. I feel your pain though, I did the same thing in a buddies attic last year and swore off tight bundles forever.

Yeah but did you at least find the bad wire or was it one of those deals where you cut everything loose and still couldn't figure out which one was the problem? I hate that more than anything, spending an hour carefully snipping zip ties and pulling cables apart only to realize the issue was somewhere else entirely. And in a finished basement no less, that's a special kind of hell where you're basically crawling around trying not to put a fist through the drywall. What was the actual fault in the end, a bad crimp or a nick in the jacket?
