Blend panels are wasting my clear coat when I do the edges wrong

I spent this Tuesday on a fender repair and kept burning through extra clear because I was fanning the edge too much. Finally watched a guy from the next bay over do his blend and he stops at the seam clean, no fading spray out past the gap. That one change cut my clear usage on that panel by about 30 percent. Has anyone else measured their material loss just by adjusting where they stop the pattern around seams?
