Can we talk about the sign painter at the fairgrounds in Kansas City?

Watched a guy lay down gold leaf on an old truck door without any tape or stencils, just freehand. Has anyone else shifted their mindset on masking after seeing a master work without it?

Watched a guy lay down gold leaf on a sign freehand in St. Louis once and it blew my mind how steady his hand was. Learning to trust my own brush control and skipping tape whenever I can has saved me a ton of time on smaller jobs. Still keep the blue tape handy for the big stuff though, no need to get cocky lol.

Thought freehand was a waste of time and tape was king. Then I saw a guy do a full window lettering job without a single straightedge and it changed my mind completely. Now I only reach for the tape when I'm doing something with a fat margin for error.

Saw a video online of this older cat out in Kansas doing a full storefront window just freehand with a brush and it was the most humbling thing I've watched in a minute. He didn't even square up his letters first, just eyeballed the spacing and went for it. Made me realize tape can become a crutch if you lean on it too hard. Started practicing my curves on junk glass at the shop and the confidence boost is real, even if I still suck compared to that guy.
