I stopped using urethane primer on plastic bumpers
Switched to adhesion promoter only on a 2018 Civic rear bumper last week in my shop in Tampa. Bumper paint started peeling within 5 days. Everyone told me I was wrong to skip the primer, but I've done it this way for 10 years and never had issues before. Has anyone else had urethane primer cause adhesion problems on TPO plastic?

Oh man, that's a rough one. Five days of Florida heat and humidity is basically a torture test for any paint job. And yeah, I've seen a few posts like @scott.jana mentioned about new TPO blends being fussy - I guess Honda decided to change things up just to keep me humble. I swear, the last time I tried to skip steps on a bumper I ended up with a paint failure that looked like a bad sunburn after a weekend at the beach. Now I just stick with the adhesion promoter and a light scuff, because peeling paint makes me feel like I forgot how to hold a spray gun.

I saw a shop owner on a forum say that newer TPO formulas are different and don't bond the same way with traditional primers, so maybe that newer Civic bumper is part of the issue.
