Old timer told me to wet-sand before clear coat on a pearl job at my shop in Flint
I was doing a 2018 silver pearl Honda Civic last month and this retired body guy named Ed stopped by. He said I needed to wet-sand the base coat with 1500 grit before laying clear. I thought he was crazy because that's not how I learned it. Tried it on one panel and the metallic laid down way more even. No tiger stripes or mottling at all. Whole car came out looking like factory glass. Has anyone else tried this or is it just for certain paint brands?

Did you use a sealer before the base coat or just straight over the primer?

Oh man, I bet that old timer Ed has forgotten more about painting than I'll ever know. Must be nice having a retired guy just wander in and drop wisdom like that for free. I wonder if he'd swing by my garage with some free advice on this damn boat I'm trying to paint.

Ed probably hasn't painted a car since before I was born. But hey, if the old man's trick works, saves me sanding twice.
