Rant: I called waterborne basecoat a fad in 2011, and now I'm the guy mixing it
Back in 2011 when the shop I was at in Tacoma switched to waterborne, I told the owner it was a fad that would blow over in a year or two, mostly because the stuff dried slow and I hated the feel of it on my gun. Fast forward to now and I'm the guy in the booth mixing water based color every day, and it lays out flatter on tri coats than solvent ever did for me. What flipped me was a 2018 job on a pearl white Camry where my old solvent mix kept mottling no matter how I adjusted the fan, and the water based came out smooth on the first pass. So here's my debate question for you all: did waterborne get better, or did I just get stubborn for 7 years for no reason? Curious if anyone else fought the change and now won't go back.
