Shoutout to the painter at my shop who showed me the 2 towel trick for blending
Honestly for my first 3 years spraying I would just hammer the blend with one wet coat and pray it faded out. Tbh my mentor Dale pulled me aside about 6 months ago and showed me his 2 towel method, one damp with reducer and one dry, and it cut my blend time in half. Now I wipe the edge with the damp towel, hit it light, then dry wipe and feather it out, and I have not had a halo come back since. Ngl I was stubborn about it at first because it felt slower, but I stopped getting those dark rings on silver and pearl jobs. We run about 12 cars a week at the shop in Amarillo so those comebacks were killing my numbers. Curious if anyone else does the 2 towel thing or if you have a better trick for blending metallic.
Man I remember the first time somebody showed me a similar trick, this old guy named Reuben at a shop in Lubbock used a gray scuff pad instead of a towel on the edge, said it knocked the metallic down just enough without leaving fuzz everywhere. Took me forever to trust it because it looked like he was scratching up a fresh panel but the blend came out clean every time. I still keep a couple pads in my cart just for silver. That plus what you said about slowing down instead of hammering it might be the whole game, the halo usually comes from being in a hurry and not letting the edge actually melt in. Good to hear your comebacks dried up, those wreck your week worse than anything when you're flat rate.
