Tried a new clear coat on a 2018 Ford F-150 hood and got weird orange peel
I sprayed three coats of this new water-based clear from a local supplier in Phoenix, letting it flash for 10 minutes between each. It dried with way more texture than the solvent-based stuff I usually use, almost like a bad orange peel. Anyone know a good way to fix this without having to sand the whole thing down and start over?

That water-based stuff can be a real pain to lay down smooth. Try wet sanding it with 1500 grit and then spraying another coat with a slower reducer. The extra flow time should help it level out better.

Actually I've had better luck with 180 grit dry sanding between coats on water based finishes. The slower reducer just makes runs more likely in my experience. Sometimes you just need to sand it back hard and spray it thin.

Dry sanding is the way to go for sure. Wet sanding just gums up the paper with water based finish. A quick scuff is all you really need.
