Warning: I spent 5 years using the wrong filler on aluminum panels

Tbh I only figured it out when a customer brought in a bumper that had been repaired 3 years ago and the filler was bubbling up. The old guy at the paint supply shop asked what I was using and when I told him he just shook his head. It was a standard polyester filler that was soaking up moisture the whole time. How many of you have had a similar moment where someone pointed out you were doing something basic completely wrong?

Did it actually cause problems or is this just another case of old timers gatekeeping what works fine?

Hate to admit it but yeah it actually caused issues. The old timers get a bad rap sometimes but experience counts. Had a buddy who tried the shortcut method and his whole foundation started cracking within two years. Sometimes the "old way" exists because it actually works.

Used to roll my eyes at the old heads and their "back in my day" lectures. Figured they just hated change or wanted to feel important. But then I watched a neighbor redo his driveway the fast way, skipping the deep base layer like all the YouTube videos said was fine. Two winters later that thing is buckled and cracked, looks worse now than before he started. Makes me wonder how many shortcuts I've taken that just haven't failed yet.
