Why does nobody talk about how much harder it is to match paint now
Back in 2005 I could walk into the shop on a Tuesday, mix a pint of base coat, and shoot a door in an hour. Last month I was working on a 2021 Tacoma in my bay and burned a full day and a half just on the blend because there are so many tint variants. My old timer buddy Ray, who ran a shop in Modesto for 30 years, told me he quit doing collision work because the tri-coats were eating his profit alive. I get it, the finishes look better than anything we had in the 90s, but is anyone else finding you need way more spray out cards and test panels than you used to?
A full day and a half on one blend? That would've gotten me fired back when I started in the booth. These tri-coats with three tint variants per color code are a different beast entirely.
