A cashier at the grocery store called me 'sir' three times before noticing my voice

I was picking up milk in Boulder last Tuesday, wearing a hoodie and a hat, and now I clear my throat before I speak to anyone at a checkout line.

Happened to me at the hardware store last month. I just wanted a light bulb and got "ma'am" from behind until I turned around. The throat clear is a solid move.

Guess I just don't get the big deal. People make honest mistakes based on a quick look, and it's not meant to hurt anyone. Why let a stranger's word choice change how you act, like clearing your throat? Seems like giving a simple mix-up way too much power over your day.
