Bought a $30 voice recorder to catch my boss's instructions, ended up with way more than I bargained for.

Okay but how bad could it really be? Bosses say dumb stuff all the time. @oscarc53 has a point about the email paper trail, that's the smart move. Unless you got him planning a crime, it's probably just the usual annoying office talk.

Been there. You have to check your local laws first, some places need both people to know about the recording. I started just sending a follow-up email after meetings. "Just to confirm, you want me to focus on the Q3 reports first, right?" It creates a paper trail without any legal gray area. What kind of stuff did you end up recording?

My old boss used to change his mind constantly. The follow-up email trick saved me more than once. I'd write it right after we talked, and bcc my personal account too. It forces them to either correct you or agree, and you have proof. Way safer than a secret recording that could get you fired.
