I used to think those 'awkward silence' memes were fake until my date asked about my job

I told her I was a clown for kids' parties and she just stared at me for a full 30 seconds while her soda dripped on the table. Has anyone else had a job detail just kill the conversation?

My buddy told someone he was a mime at a party once. The guy just stared for a full ten seconds, then slowly walked away to get another drink. He said it was like he'd broken the guy's brain.

Tell people you fix air conditioners and watch their eyes glaze over too. The trick is to own it and make it sound interesting. I say I keep people from melting in the summer, which usually gets a laugh. If they're still stuck, just ask about their job right back. Most people love to talk about themselves.
