My boss's advice to fake it til I make it backfired hard at happy hour

My manager Dave told me to just nod along about sports talk even if I knew nothing, so at the office happy hour I agreed the Lakers were smart to trade a guy named Ohtani. The whole table stared at me for 10 seconds before the accountant, a huge Angels fan, corrected me with a laugh. Has anyone else followed bad advice that made you look more clueless than if you'd just said "I don't follow"?
