My washing machine died mid-cycle Tuesday and I spent an hour trying to hand-wring a soaked comforter in my bathtub at 11pm

My mother used to tell me about when she moved into her first apartment and didn't have a washer for three months. She'd haul everything to the laundromat two blocks away in a grocery cart, rain or shine. One night she left a load in the dryer too long and came back to find someone had taken all her towels. Hand-wringing a wet comforter in a bathtub at 11pm sounds like an initiation ritual we all have to go through once.

oh man @hayes.joel the "hand-wringing a wet comforter in a bathtub at 11pm" part hit me right in the feels lol. i remember my first apartment in college, no washer for like 4 months. one time i tried to wash a queen sized duvet in the bathtub and it was like wrestling a wet bear. water everywhere, my back hurting, and i still had to hang it over the shower rod and pray it dried by morning. worst part was i had to walk past the fancy building with the in-unit laundry every time i hauled my stuff to the laundromat. it really does feel like a weird rite of passage you just gotta survive once.
