Paid for a gym membership for 14 months, never stepped inside

Signed up at a gym near my apartment in Columbus back in January because I had a whole plan. Paid $39 a month, every month, through February of the next year. Never once walked through their doors. I kept telling myself next week, and next week turned into next season. Found out they auto-renewed for another three months after my card expired, and the cancellation process took two phone calls and a notarized form. That's roughly $550 for nothing but guilt and a lanyard they mailed me. Has anyone else got stuck paying for something they never used, or is this just my tax on good intentions?
