That $40 shrimp ring at the company party that backfired big

My boss asked me to grab a last-minute appetizer for the holiday potluck, so I dropped $40 on this fancy cocktail shrimp platter from a seafood place downtown. Everyone dove in at first, then our intern found a tiny shell piece and chewed on it weird, and suddenly the whole table went quiet watching him spit it into a napkin. He turned bright red, mumbled about a crown, and my shrimp became the awkward centerpiece nobody touched again for the rest of the night. Has anyone else spent good money on food that ended up the villain of the party?

Yeah that shell piece pretty much murdered the whole vibe before anyone could even judge the quality. One bad bite and suddenly everyone's scanning their food like it's a crime scene instead of a party snack. I learned the hard way that fancy seafood at a potluck is a gamble, cheaper crowd-pleasers like wings or sliders never get that side-eye treatment.
