That checkout line stare-down at Costco last weekend was brutal

I was at the Costco in Tempe on Saturday, just trying to grab a rotisserie chicken and some paper towels. The line was so long it wrapped past the freezer section, and I swear the guy behind me was standing so close I could feel his breath on my neck. I turned around to give him a polite 'hey, a little space' look, but instead I made direct eye contact with this old lady holding a giant jar of pickles who was just staring at my cart like I had committed a crime for having a box of cookies. She didn't blink for like 15 seconds, and then she said 'those are the good ones' in this dead serious voice while pointing at my cookies. I froze, mumbled 'thanks', and then the cashier yelled my total while I was still mid-weird-moment. I awkwardly shuffled forward, dropped my card, and the pickle lady just sighed loudly. Has anyone else gotten stuck in that weird silent staring contest at Costco? How do you break it without looking insane? I ended up eating the whole box in the car because I couldn't handle the vibe.
