That time I spent $150 on a voice changer for a prank call

My buddy dared me to prank call our old gym teacher with a weird voice. I went online and bought this 'professional' voice changer for about 150 bucks. It looked like a cheap walkie-talkie. I called him up, pressed the 'robot' button, and started my bit. Total silence on his end. Then he just said, 'Fisher, I'd know that nervous breathing anywhere.' I froze and hung up. Saw him at the grocery store two days later and he just shook his head at me. The thing broke after a week. Anyone else have a gadget purchase completely backfire on them?

The "nervous breathing" is what really sells it, that's too perfect. Honestly, a gadget that breaks after a week is almost a badge of honor at this point. It's like what scott.miles said about the self-stirring pot, these things are built to fail just enough to make you feel like a total fool. At least your failure had a witness, my dumb purchases usually just die alone in a drawer with no one to laugh at me.

Man, that's actually hilarious though. The tech failed but the story is priceless. I've had way dumber purchases that left me with nothing, at least you got a solid memory and a funny story to tell forever. My cousin bought a drone that flew into a lake on its first flight, now that's a true waste of cash. Your gym teacher knowing it was you is the best part.

Oh man, that drone story is brutal. My buddy had a similar thing with one of those fancy self-stirring pots he got as a gift. He was so excited to make soup without stirring, but the little motor inside just gave up after like two minutes. It made this sad whirring noise and died, leaving him with a pot of lumpy, half-cooked potato soup. The worst part was he tried to return it and the store said it wasn't meant for "thick mixtures," which, come on, it's a soup pot. At least the drone went out in a blaze of glory, his gadget just quit quietly on the counter.
