Vent: I tried a weird trick to get out of a silent elevator ride with my boss and it actually worked

My old boss at the warehouse hated small talk. One time I just pointed at the floor numbers and said "they go up so fast" like an idiot. He actually laughed and we talked about the broken AC for the rest of the ride.

My last office had these ancient elevators that always stopped with a loud thud. The silence after that sound with my manager was pure torture. I once just blurted out "sounds angry today" about the elevator motor. He nodded and said it needed to be put out of its misery. It broke the ice for a whole thirty seconds, which felt like a win.

Respect the commitment to weird elevator talk. Honestly, those awkward silences feel like they last an hour, so any trick that works is a good trick. It's all about finding any little thing to point at and make a dumb comment about, just to fill the dead air. The goal isn't to have a deep chat, it's just to stop the quiet from being so loud. Both those stories prove that bosses are often just as uncomfortable as we are and will grab onto any lifeline.
