Warning: I heard a guy at the coffee shop say 'awkward stories are just failures you survived' and it made me think, are they funny lessons or just cringe we should forget?

He was telling his friend about tripping into a wedding cake, and I realized I still cringe at my own story of calling my teacher 'mom' in front of the whole 10th grade class, so which side are you on?

Totally on the side of funny lessons, honestly. My own face still gets hot remembering the time I waved back at a stranger who was waving at someone behind me. Those moments teach you to laugh at yourself, which is a pretty good skill.

Oh man, I used to get so mad at myself for stuff like that. But you're right, @karen_roberts4, that story is a perfect example. I had a similar thing happen where I called a teacher "mom" in high school and wanted to disappear. Learning to just laugh it off now is way better than cringing for years.

Remembering my own cringe moments still makes me wince. I once tripped and spilled a whole tray of drinks in a quiet cafe. The only real fix is time, and maybe a little forced laughter.
