Got stuck in a broken elevator for 45 minutes last week and it changed my whole morning routine

I was heading to my dentist appointment downtown and the elevator just stopped between floors. No warning, no jolt, just silence. I pressed the call button and waited. Then I waited more. By the time they got me out I had missed my appointment and had to reschedule for next month. That whole day was shot because I was rattled and couldn't focus at work. Now I always take the stairs if it's under five floors. I even started timing my walks to see if I can beat my own records. Has anyone else had a bad run with an elevator and just decided to ditch them?

42 years in construction and I've seen the maintenance logs on most buildings downtown. Elevators break way more than people realize, they just get fixed fast enough that nobody notices. The real problem is most building managers will wait until a violation notice before they replace cables or brakes.

Jumped right into a whole new way of looking at things after that, huh? It's funny how one unexpected thing can just flip a switch in your brain. I've noticed a bigger pattern with stuff like this, where people get spooked by a sudden failure in something they trusted and then they completely change how they do things. It's like that moment makes you realize how much of life runs on autopilot. Then you start questioning everything, not just elevators but all the little routines you never thought twice about. It's almost like learning to be more alert, even if it's just timing your walk to the coffee shop.
