Just realized I'd been peeling ginger wrong my whole life - used a spoon instead of a knife and it worked way better.
My roommate caught me hacking away at a knob with a vegetable peeler for like 10 minutes and just handed me a spoon without saying anything, took the skin off in like 30 seconds flat and I felt so dumb, has anyone else had a random kitchen tool totally change how you prep something?

The frozen ginger thing sounds amazing but honestly I've tried it a few times and you gotta be careful. If the ginger is too frozen solid, the spoon just skips across the surface and doesn't peel anything, it actually works better when it's just cold from the fridge but not rock hard. I mean, I wasted a whole knob trying to do it with ginger straight from the freezer and ended up with a mess. Also, I don't think peeling with a spoon really stops waste that much compared to a knife, like you still have to shave off some flesh to get all the brown bits in the crevices. The real win for me with the spoon is just how fast and smooth it is on the lumpy parts, not necessarily saving more ginger. And yeah turmeric peels the same way, totally agree on that part.

I saw a cooking show once where the host peeled ginger with a spoon and it blew my mind too. The spoon just glides along the curves of the ginger root without gouging out the actual flesh like a knife always does. A vegetable peeler is also way too clumsy for the knobby bits. Ever since I switched to a spoon, I waste way less ginger and it feels like a cheat code. The same trick works for peeling fresh turmeric too, if you ever mess with that.

And you can even freeze the ginger first and the spoon peels it in one smooth strip without any waste at all, right?
