My coffee maker died at 6am and I almost lost it

So this morning I stumbled into the kitchen half asleep, ready to get my coffee going before the kids wake up. I fill the tank, put a filter in, hit the brew button and... nothing. Not a sound, not a light, just dead silence. It's a Mr. Coffee I've had for maybe 3 years, nothing fancy but it always worked. I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, even checked the outlet with my phone charger. That's when I realized I had to either go to the gas station for a $4 cup or just deal with the headache. Ended up driving to the 7-Eleven on Pine Street in my pajamas at 6:15am. Has anyone else had a appliance just give up at the worst possible time?

@bennett.vera has an interesting point about voltage spikes, but honestly that sounds like something a coffee maker repairman would make up to sell you a new one. Most Mr. Coffee units I've owned just die whenever they feel like it, usually when you need them most. If anything, the early morning theory gives people an excuse for why their cheap appliance quit, when really it's just the poor quality of modern gadgets compared to what we used to buy. You got three years out of it, which is about average for those plastic machines. Next time maybe spring for a stainless steel one with a metal heating element, those tend to last longer even if they cost a bit more upfront.

Oh man that's brutal. I heard somewhere that appliances actually have a higher chance of breaking down early in the morning because of voltage spikes when people start turning stuff on. Maybe that's just urban legend but it makes you wonder. Hope you got your coffee fix at least.
