Pro tip: my mornings flipped in 2 weeks, so is waking up at 5am really the fix or is it the quiet?
Two weeks ago I started getting up at 5:15am instead of my usual 7, mostly to dodge the noise of my roommates in our thin-walled apartment on Clark St in Chicago. The before was rushing out the door at 7:40 in a panic, no food, already annoyed. The after is 25 quiet minutes with coffee before anyone else moves, and I leave the house in a way better mood. But now I'm wondering if the real win is the 5am part or just having any alone time at all. Anyone else try this, did the early alarm actually help you or was it something else?
My buddy Dave in Wicker Park tried the 5am thing for like 3 weeks and he said the alarm part was brutal but the alone time was the whole point. He'd just sit on his back steps with a cup of coffee before his kids woke up, didn't matter that it was 5, could've been 6. Then he switched to staying up late instead and it flopped because he was too tired to enjoy it. So the quiet is what he was really after, the time slot was just how he got it. You could probably get the same thing at 6 or 6:30 if your roommates sleep in, the trick is just having that gap before the chaos starts.
