Question about that $30 food dehydrator I ignored for 6 months

I finally dug it out of the closet last Sunday and dried a batch of apples overnight - the texture came out way better than store-bought chips. Did you stick with your impulse buy or was it a one-time thing?

Good for you for getting some use out of it, but I'm gonna be the one to say these things are a total waste. The apples you dried probably taste okay, but the amount of electricity they suck down just to make a handful of snacks is ridiculous. Most people use them once, get bored, and they end up back in the closet for another six years. You can buy a bag of dried fruit at the store for a few bucks and skip all the setup and cleanup. Plus, the plastic trays always get that weird smell after a couple uses that never washes out. I say save your money and counter space and just toss it.

Did you actually use it more than once or is it back in the closet already?

Read somewhere that dehydrating actually keeps more nutrients than canning or freezing, so maybe it's not just about convenience.
