Serious question, does an emergency fund really need to be cash?
I put $500 into a prepaid debit card as my car repair emergency fund last March. When my alternator died on the highway last week, the card had a $4.95 monthly fee that ate into it and the repair shop wouldn't take it. Anyone else stash emergency cash and get burned by fees or restrictions?

Prepaid debit cards are a terrible idea for an emergency fund. Monthly fees and merchant restrictions will kill you every time. Cash is king for that reason no fees, no expiration, no questions asked anywhere you go. Your alternator story is a perfect example of why people shouldn't trust fintech gimmicks over actual greenbacks. Most shops I've dealt with only take cash or major credit cards anyway, so prepaid cards are dead weight. A real emergency fund needs to be accessible instantly with zero barriers, and cash is the only thing that guarantees that.

Cash definitely works but a simple checking account with no fees can be just as accessible and doesn't get eaten up by monthly charges. Most shops take debit cards that pull from a regular bank account, and you can grab cash from an ATM in minutes if you need it. The prepaid card route just adds extra hoops and costs that totally defeat the purpose of an emergency fund.
