Took me 3 hours to change a light fixture, the old wiring was a mess

Was swapping out this ceiling light in my hallway. Thought it was a 20 minute job. Pulled the old one down and the wires were all tangled with some weird splice that looked older than me. Had to watch like 4 videos, run to Home Depot twice for wire nuts and a voltage tester. By the time I got it done I was sweating and the ladder almost slipped. Has anyone else dealt with mystery wiring in an older house? How long did your simple DIY take?
