My sourdough starter went completely flat after I left town for a weekend

I forgot to feed it before a trip to Denver, and came back to a gray, watery mess. Has anyone successfully revived a starter that looked totally dead?

Listen to @williamm82 and feed it aggressively, like it's a pet that tried to run away.

My buddy Mark in Austin left his starter for almost a week last summer. It smelled like nail polish remover and had a dark liquid layer on top. He poured off the liquid, saved a tiny spoonful from the bottom, and mixed it with fresh flour and water. He fed it twice a day for about four days straight. It finally started bubbling again on the fifth day, weaker but alive. He still uses it now, so there's definitely hope.

Sounds like your starter went on vacation without you. Gray and watery is just its way of saying it had a rough weekend. Follow that Austin guy's plan, feed it like it owes you money. Might come back with a real attitude problem.
