That $75 sourdough starter kit was a total waste

Bought one of those fancy 'artisanal' starter kits online with the special jar and organic heritage flour. Paid $75 for it, followed the instructions to the letter for 10 days. Got nothing but gray sludge that smelled like vomit. You can make a perfectly good starter with a Mason jar and all-purpose flour for maybe $3. Has anyone else fallen for these overpriced starter packages?

Used to defend those kits but this changed my mind completely (ugh).

Used to be one of those people who swore by the special equipment and organic this-and-that for sourdough. Even bought a fancy banneton basket thinking it was the secret to good bread. After watching my $75 kit turn into that stinky gray mess you described, I grabbed a clean pickle jar and some cheap flour from the grocery store. Five days later I had a bubbly, active starter that smelled like yogurt instead of vomit. What a difference the right method makes, right?

Wait, a pickle jar? That actually worked better?
