Walked into a bakery in St. Louis last week and saw they were charging $8 for a single croissant
It was a plain butter croissant too, no filling or fancy topping, and it made me wonder if we've all just accepted that artisan baking means we get to charge whatever we want now, has anyone else seen prices jump like that in their area?

Man, I feel this. I literally spent $9 on a croissant in Portland last month and I'm still not over it. Took one bite and had to sit down because I realized I just paid more for that thing than my first car payment. I mean... at what point does a baked good become a financial decision instead of just a snack? My wallet's still trying to process the trauma.

$9 for a croissant is basically paying rent in flour form.

But was it at least a good croissant? Because that's really the question nobody ever seems to want to ask when these prices come up. We just get mad about the number without stopping to think if the thing itself was actually worth it. I've had $3 croissants that were more like sweetened bread shaped like a crescent, and I've had $9 ones that literally flaked apart in my hands and melted on my tongue. So was this a case of overpriced mediocrity, or did you actually get something special for all that money? Because if it was genuinely exceptional, maybe the trauma is just shock at the new reality of what good baking costs now.
