Cheap offset smoker mod that fixed my temp swings for $12

My $150 offset from the big box store would swing 60 degrees no matter what I did. Tried thicker gaskets, tuning plates, even wrapping the firebox in a welding blanket. Then a guy in a Houston bbq group told me to seal the cook chamber with nomex tape and a small piece of sheet metal over the firebox opening. That cut my swings to about 15 degrees over a 6 hour pork shoulder cook last Saturday. Anyone else got a janky cheap smoker fix that actually worked better than the expensive upgrades?

That "15 degrees" fix sounds like luck more than a real cure for a thin box smoker.
