Hot take: Spending $400 on a fancy wireless meat probe set was a total waste for me

I bought the Smoke X4 system last year thinking it would be a game changer for my overnight brisket cooks. Honestly, the range was worse than my old $40 wired probe, and I lost connection twice during a crucial cook in my backyard in Austin. For that kind of cash, I expected way more reliability. Anyone have a simpler probe they swear by that just works?

The Smoke X4 actually has a 500 foot range, but thick walls can mess with the signal.

Always figured the range claims were a bit overblown for most smart home stuff. @bennett.vera pointing out how walls really cut into that makes a lot of sense, my old place had plaster and it was a dead zone. That specific detail about thick walls explains why my last sensor was so spotty.

My old apartment had those old school brick walls and it cut the range in half. The material matters more than just thickness sometimes. That 500 foot claim is basically for open air with no real world stuff in the way.
