Showerthought: Does spending big on a smoker actually make better BBQ?

Dropped $900 on a Yoder pellet smoker last year. Thought it'd be a game changer. But my buddy's $300 offset from Walmart keeps turning out better ribs than mine. Is it the gear or the person running it? What's your take on costly setups vs basic rigs?

My friend's Traeger caught fire twice before he gave up on it.
