Showerthought: I dropped $80 on a 'premium' brisket rub that was basically salt and pepper.
Saw it at a competition in Austin, bought two jars thinking it was some secret blend. Opened it up and the ingredient list was literally just coarse salt and cracked black pepper. Anyone know a good rub recipe that's actually worth the hype?

Honestly, that "secret blend" is often just salt and pepper because that's all a great brisket really needs.

Ever tried a little garlic powder in there too? It can really help the bark form without changing the basic flavor.

The garlic powder trick from @the_eric is a solid move for sure. I tried it once and my neighbor came over asking if I was baking bread because the smell was so good. It does help the bark, but then my wife said it tasted like fancy garlic bread, not brisket. So now I'm stuck in this loop where I want a better crust but also want that pure beef flavor. It feels like you can't win sometimes lol.
