That $140 'competition grade' rub kit was mostly salt and disappointment
Bought a big fancy rub sampler at a BBQ expo in Austin last fall, 12 jars for $140. Got so hyped on the packaging and the pitmaster's spiel, figured it'd level up my brisket game. Turns out 8 of the 12 were basically salt, paprika, and sugar with different labels. My smokehouse ribs came out tasting identical no matter which jar I used. I could've bought the same stuff from the bulk bin for maybe $20. Has anyone else gotten burned on overpriced rub sets, or got a brand that's actually worth the cash?

Killer Hogs got me out of that trap, their AP rub is like $12 and does everything I need on pork and chicken. Made my own beef blend with coarse salt, pepper, and a little garlic powder, costs pennies a batch and tastes way better than any of that overpriced stuff. Once you realize most rubs are just salt, sugar, and paprika with fancy names, the whole sampler racket loses its charm.
