TIL my $200 'competition grade' injection marinade was basically just salt water and MSG

Bought it from a guy at a cookoff in Kansas City last fall. He swore it was his secret weapon, said it would add 20 points to my brisket score. Used it on three whole packers, about $450 worth of meat. Not only did it not help, it made everything taste kinda fake and chemical. My usual simple rub scored higher the next week. Felt like a total sucker. Anyone know a legit injection recipe that actually works, or should I just stick to the basics?

Maybe that fake taste was just the flavor of winning...

My buddy got a promotion after his boss left under weird circumstances. He said the extra money tasted like metal for months. Sometimes the win just feels off.

Oof, that's rough. I once bought a "magic" rib rub that was just brown sugar and way too much paprika. I mean, my ribs tasted like I was eating a candle. Maybe we should start a club for people who get tricked by fancy food guys.
