A client's one-line note on my invoice changed how I do estimates
After a client in Portland pointed out my $150 estimate didn't break out materials vs labor, I started itemizing every job. Took about 20 minutes more per quote, but now people stop asking why the total is what it is. Has anyone else found that being too vague on paper just invites more back and forth?

The real trick here isn't just itemizing materials and labor, it's showing the why behind each line. Like, I've seen folks put "$45 for parts" and the client still asks "what parts?" because they think you're hiding markup in there. Instead, write "2 gallons of primer, $45" and suddenly it reads as transparent, not defensive. That extra 20 minutes is basically buying you trust, which is way cheaper than arguing over a vague total later. Plus, when a client sees the actual breakdown, they usually stop trying to negotiate each line and just pay the sum, which is the whole point.
