Blew my commute budget by 60 bucks, but the backup plan worked

Honestly, my car's alternator gave out last Wednesday on the I-5 stretch near Tacoma. I was stuck for an hour before a tow truck came, and the repair plus towing ran me $340 total. That was way more than the $280 I had set aside for the month, so I had to shift my grocery money around and start taking the bus. It added 45 minutes each way, but I found a podcast I actually like and got a seat every single day. Now I'm wondering if anyone else has a routine for handling surprise car costs without touching savings? What's your go-to backup when the daily grind throws a wrench in things?

Last March my alternator died right outside Olympia and the tow alone ate 90 bucks, so I feel this hard. I ended up biking to the park and ride for two weeks and honestly the extra time kinda forced me to slow down, which was weirdly nice. Now I keep a little checklist of cheap fallback routes and always stash 40 bucks in my glovebox for the absolute worst days.
