Honestly, my coffee grinder just gave up halfway through my morning routine yesterday. The motor made this sad humming noise and then nothing.

Seriously, a sad humming noise? That's the worst way for a machine to die. It just sounds so pathetic, like it was trying and just couldn't. Mine blew a fuse with a pop and a spark, which was almost better. A sad hum feels like a betrayal.

My old fridge went out with that same sad hum last year. It sounded like a tired animal giving up, which was way worse than a loud bang. I ended up calling a repair guy who said the compressor was shot. He told me those quiet failures usually mean something burned out slowly over time.
