I used to wake up at 5 AM every day to beat traffic, but after 2 years of that I switched to leaving at 9 AM and my blood pressure dropped 20 points.
The difference was that rush hour stress was eating me alive on the inside, and now I just listen to podcasts during a slower drive - has anyone else found that fighting the crowd was actually hurting them more than helping?

Traffic jams are just group therapy for angry people...

Remember that traffic doesn't really start backing up until around 7:30 in most places, so the 5 AM thing was definitely overkill unless you were driving through a major city. @the_elliot is kind of right about the group therapy thing, but I think it's more like a shared misery where everyone's silently competing to see who can get there first. The real kicker is that the people who leave at 9 AM are actually making the smarter choice because they're not feeding into that whole angry driver cycle. I've noticed that the ones who brag about waking up at dawn to beat traffic always seem the most burned out by noon.
