Just realized most people at my gym in Springfield are setting the treadmill incline way too low to actually mimic outdoor walking.
Honestly, after tracking my heart rate for a month, I found you need at least a 3% incline to properly simulate the resistance of pavement and actually get the cardio benefit you think you're getting from a flat walk.

Totally agree! I started hiking last year and realized my treadmill walks were doing nothing to prepare me. I bumped it up to a 5% incline just to feel a little burn, and wow, what a difference. My legs were sore in a good way for the first time. It makes the whole workout feel way more real and useful.

Try a 4% incline like morgan_bailey93.

My treadmill incline is set to "just trying to keep up." A little burn sounds better than my usual "barely breathing" setting. Maybe I'll give that a try and see if my legs agree.
