My boss said my morning check-in emails were like a bad weather report
He pulled me aside last Thursday and said, 'Grant, your updates just list what you did, not why it matters.' I used to send a bullet list of tasks every day at 9:15 AM. Now I write one sentence on what I'm trying to fix or learn that day. It feels weird but he says it's better. Anyone else get told their routine update was missing the point?

Your boss wants a story, not a grocery list.

Yeah, Oliver's right about the story thing. It's like how my kid will just say "I built a Lego thing" instead of telling me the whole plot about the spaceship saving the castle.

Ever notice how a good story has a problem and a fix? Next time, try starting with "We had this issue where..." and then walk them through how you solved it. It turns a list of tasks into something they can follow.
