My dad insisted I "never work for free" but helping a neighbor fix their fence last Saturday led to three paid gigs this week

He meant well with that advice from his 9-to-5 world, but turning down that small favor almost cost me a whole network of referrals in my neighborhood, has anyone else found that saying yes to unpaid stuff actually pays off bigger down the road?

Changed my mind too. That first free job turned into my steadiest client.

I used to think free work was a scam, but "first free job turned into my steadiest client" makes a lot of sense now. Guess I was wrong about that.

lol yeah honestly I totally get that. I did a free logo for a friend's cousin once and now I get like 4 referrals a year from them. Sometimes free stuff just opens doors you didn't even know were there.
