My grandpa told me to always warm up the engine for 5 minutes before driving, turns out that's terrible advice

He's been driving old trucks for 40 years so I figured he knew what he was talking about. Warmed up my car every morning last winter for like 5-10 minutes before leaving. Then my buddy who's a mechanic told me modern engines don't need that, and I was just wasting gas and building up carbon. He showed me a data log from his scan tool. Felt kinda dumb. Anybody else get stuck following old advice that doesn't apply anymore?

I read somewhere that modern cars actually reach optimal operating temp faster by driving gently rather than idling. Crazy how much stuff our grandpas told us that just isn't true anymore with newer tech.

Did the buddy's dad actually follow the manual or was he just guessing? Because I feel like a lot of engine seizures come from people ignoring the actual recommended warm-up procedure, not from the driving itself.

My buddy's dad seized his new truck's engine doing that.
