The barista at my local shop remembered my order after one visit and it got me thinking about how rare that is now

Have you noticed how most places aim for speed over actually remembering people now? It's like we traded connection for efficiency, and now when someone does remember your name or drink it stands out. Feels like a dying art, along with customer service clerks who can find things without a computer prompt. Makes you wonder what else we gave up for faster checkouts.

Hang on, you're telling me @ivan_mason just said "along with customer service clerks who can find things without a computer prompt" like that's a good thing? I had a guy at the hardware store last week stare at his screen for a solid minute before he could tell me which aisle the caulk was in. Aisle three. It's been aisle three since 1998. The register beeped at him to offer a screwdriver set I didn't ask for. Efficiency my foot.

Last time I went to the grocery store, the self-checkout machine yelled at me for putting my apple in the bag too slow. Then it made me watch a 15 second ad before I could pay. Meanwhile, the one human cashier left had a line of 12 people and looked like she hadn't blinked since 2019. I miss the old lady at the corner store who knew I liked my hot dogs with mustard and extra onions.
