The janitor at my office in Cleveland said he mops the floors in a pattern, and now I can't stop thinking about it
He told me last Thursday that he always starts at the far corner and works toward the door so he never has to walk back over wet floor, which sounds obvious but I'd been doing my own kitchen the opposite way for years. He also said he times himself, and his best is 11 minutes for the whole third floor. I tried his corner-first thing at home over the weekend and it actually cut my mopping time down. Does anyone else have a routine they picked up from watching someone else work, not from being taught?
The closest I get to a trick like that is watching the guys at the car wash and copying how they dry a car top to bottom so the drips don't undo the work. Meanwhile my own mopping method for years has been the classic "walk through the wet part, slip, grab the counter, pretend that was on purpose" routine. Corner first makes total sense though, because you are basically mopping yourself into a trap if you start at the door. Eleven minutes for a whole floor is wild, I would still be refilling the bucket by then.
