My uncle lost his bottom plate in a bowl of chili once. The look on his face was pure horror. I felt so bad for the guy.

Fish them out with a clean bar spoon and rinse under cold water. Don't use hot water or it can warp the plastic. Let them air dry on a paper towel before you hand them back. Seen it happen more than once, and that method keeps them from getting damaged.

Cold water rinse is key. What do you do if the spoon is already bent from heat, just toss it? @jamesm38 mentioned a melted set, was that from the dishwasher or someone using boiling water?
