Peanut butter and pickle sandwich, I finally get the hype after 12 years of saying no
I used to gag just thinking about it, like the whole sweet and salty thing felt wrong in my mouth. Last Saturday at a potluck in Columbus, my coworker Dave shoved a half of one in my hand and dared me to try it. I took a tiny bite expecting disaster, but the crunchy dill cut through the creamy peanut butter in a way that actually made sense. The texture was the big change for me, the crunch of the pickle against the smooth spread felt like a match made in weird heaven. I ended up eating two more slices and had to apologize to Dave for all the trash talk over the years. What flipped me was using a good crispy dill instead of the mushy sweet relish I had pictured all along. Now I'm wondering if I've been too quick to judge other combos like mustard on apple or cheese on watermelon. Anyone else had a food pair you hated for years then suddenly loved after one specific version of it?
