That $28 durian and peanut butter dip was a scam, fight me
Last Thursday I dropped $28 on a fresh durian at a specialty market in Portland, then mixed it with creamy peanut butter because some blog swore it was like a savory dessert. The smell alone made my roommate leave the kitchen, and the taste was worse than I imagined, like sweet onion mixed with gym socks and sand. Meanwhile my buddy says the combo is amazing if you warm the peanut butter first and add a pinch of salt, but I was too scared to try again after one bite. Is it possible I got a bad durian or is this combo just a total trap? Who else has paid stupid money for a weird bite that ended up in the trash after 5 minutes? What's the most you've lost on a hyped-up bizarre food pairing?

Sweet onion mixed with gym socks and sand" is tragically accurate, I almost choked laughing. That said, your buddy might be onto something with the warm PB and salt, but I lost my nerve too. Last year I paid $18 for a tiny jar of "truffle honey" at a farmers market and drizzled it on plain crackers like the blogger said. Tasted like a fancy airport bathroom air freshener, and I kept the jar for a week just to smell it before I finally tossed it. My worst loss was $40 on a smoked blue cheese that I tried to melt into a grilled cheese, ended up feeding the whole block of it to my dog's friend because even the squirrel refused it. You ever tried pairing durian with something cold like vanilla ice cream, or is that just another trap?
